“We are here to have a ball so we want you to leave your worldly troubles outside and come in here and swing.” -Art Blakey
Two great shows into their "Homage to the Message" series, co-producers James Zeller and Ramsey Isaacs turn their attention to the compositions of Benny Golson, renowned tenor saxophonist, composer and Jazz Messenger who contributed 4 compositions to the album, "Moanin'".
Benny Golson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on January 25, 1929. His first instrument was piano, and he was inspired by Brahms and Chopin. He began playing saxophone at age 14, and met and played with John Coltrane, three years his senior, around this time. Another Philly childhood association was with the great saxophonist/composer Jimmy Heath.
