The Sanctuary celebrates the Billie Holiday Songbook in a birthday tribute to Lady Day April 6th. This show will be swingin’, highly entertaining and also educational, with hosts sharing stories to set the music in historical context. Some of Humboldt’s finest jazz singers will be on the bill: Lorenza Simmons, Paula Jones, Claire Bent, Katie Belknap and James Zeller.
In 1937, while touring with Count Basie, Billie Holiday was nicknamed “Lady Day” by Lester Young. She named him “Pres”. From then on she went by her nickname. She is often sighted by Jazz singers as their greatest influence. For the Sanctuary tribute, each featured singer has chosen songs to sing from Lady Day’s repertoire, and will share stories of their personal experience with Lady Day’s music.
This tops-bar-none-cream-of-the-crop-all-star line-up of singers will be joined by a tasteful, easy swingin’ rhythm section of some of Humboldt’s finest jazz players.
